Showa-kan（National Showa Memorial Museum）

Showa-kan is a national facility dedicated to preserving the memories of the wars experienced by the Japanese people during the Showa era and conveying the hardships of daily life during that time to future generations.
The permanent exhibition rooms on the 7th and 6th floors focus on the main theme of “The Lives of Ordinary People from Showa 10 to around Showa 40,” displaying more than 500 authentic artifacts that supported people's lives during and after the war.
Visitors can learn about life during the war through items such as flags and banners used to see off soldiers departing for the front, Japanese national flags covered with handwritten messages, everyday household items used by the families left behind, posters bearing slogans intended to boost wartime morale, and an air-raid shelter experience.
Furthermore, materials from the postwar period—when people struggled to survive amid shortages of daily necessities by making shopping trips to farming villages or relying on black markets—allow visitors to understand the hardships of everyday life at that time.
More than 80 years have passed since the end of the war, and the number of people who can share their firsthand experiences continues to decline. These surviving artifacts silently convey the memories of that era from within their display cases, and it is important that we receive their message with care.
