Sonohyan Utaki Ishimon (Sonohyan Utaki Stone Gate)
This stone gate stands at the entrance to the sacred site known as Sonohyan Utaki, while the forest beyond the gate itself forms the actual sanctuary.
In Okinawan spiritual belief, the forest itself is regarded as the sacred object of worship. Closely connected to Okinawa’s unique Utaki faith, this site is an important historical and cultural landmark and is registered as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The stone gate was built in 1519. Although it resembles a gate, it was not intended for people to pass through. Rather, it was constructed as a place of worship facing the sacred Utaki beyond.
Before setting out on journeys, the king once came here to pray for safe travels. In addition, before the enthronement ceremony held at Sefa Utaki, prayers were offered here by the highest-ranking female priestess known as the “Kikoe Ōkimi.” The site also served as the first sacred place of worship, or “uganju,” along the pilgrimage route known as the “Agari-umai.”
The Stone Gate is considered a representative example of Ryukyuan stone architecture, blending elements of both Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. Decorative roof ornaments called “shibi” are attached to both sides of the roof, while fish-shaped carvings known as “gegyo” are placed at the top ends as talismans against fire.
Be sure to take a close look at the delicate carvings engraved along the stone ridges as well.
