Affectionately known as “Okimyu,” the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum is a rare complex in Japan, bringing together both a history museum and an art museum under one roof. Its fortress-like exterior, softened by gently rounded corners and clad in Ryukyu limestone, evokes the form of a traditional Okinawan castle, or gusuku.
The theme of the museum’s permanent exhibition is “Living with the Sea and Islands.” As you enter, a coral reef display at your feet creates the sensation of being guided from the sea onto the land. From here, the exhibition unfolds chronologically—from ancient times, through the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and into Okinawa’s modern and contemporary history—through a series of carefully curated displays.
The art museum, on the other hand, highlights works by artists from Okinawa, as well as those with close ties to the region. At the Information Center, visitors can explore the collection database, browse books and video materials related to Okinawa, and borrow complimentary audio guides.
This facility offers a comprehensive learning experience, spanning Okinawa’s natural environment, folk traditions, cultural heritage, and the origins of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It is an ideal place to begin your journey and deepen your understanding before exploring Okinawa.
