Fukushuen Garden was created in 1992 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the friendship agreement between Naha and Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, Naha's sister city, as well as the 70th anniversary of Naha's incorporation as a city.
This picturesque Chinese-style garden, which combines the five elements of ponds, rocks, trees, bridges, and pavilions, was designed and constructed with the involvement of Fuzhou City, and even the building materials were imported from China. The garden is laid out to represent the four seasons and is modeled after the landscapes of Fuzhou, featuring exquisitely carved openwork windows and a beautiful harmony of water and greenery.
The Kume district of Naha City, where Fukushuen Garden is located, was once home to many Chinese immigrants from Fujian Province and was known as “Kuninda,” although it was written with the characters for “Kume Village.” Adjacent to the garden is “Kuninda Terrace,” named after this historic district, where a free historical exhibition room introduces the appearance of the settlement in those days.
