Tōshō-gū shrines are dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, with Nikkō Tōshō-gū being the most prominent among them.
Sendai Tōshō-gū symbolizes the deep ties between the Sendai Domain and the Tokugawa family, including their kinship. It was founded during the reign of Date Tadamune, the second lord of the Sendai Domain.
After the death of the first lord, Masamune, the domain undertook the construction of Zuihōden, his mausoleum. However, due to a series of major fires and floods, the domain’s finances deteriorated severely, leading it to request assistance from the Tokugawa shogunate.
The second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, readily agreed. Once the domain’s finances had recovered, the Date Domain offered to build a Tōshō-gū shrine as a token of gratitude. The third shogun, Iemitsu, granted permission, and the shrine was completed in 1654.
The project took five years and involved a workforce of approximately 800,000 people, with total construction costs of 20,000 ryō—equivalent to roughly 2 billion yen in today’s currency. The main hall and the Karamon gate are adorned with cloisonné metalwork representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship of the era.
Among the more than 500 Tōshō-gū shrines across Japan, this type of cloisonné decoration is found only at Sendai Tōshō-gū and Nikkō Tōshō-gū. Five buildings, including the main hall, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Furthermore, the area formed by the retainers of the Date clan, known as the “Gofudai-machi,” became a parish community. From the year following its founding, annual festival ceremonies began to be held, and the shrine has been revered as the guardian deity of Sendai, continuing to serve as a source of spiritual support for local residents to this day.
