Mojiko Retro

In the waterfront district facing Mojiko, which flourished as one of Japan’s gateways to the world from the Meiji era through the early Shōwa era, stands a collection of historic buildings that preserve the atmosphere of those days. This area is known as Mojiko Retro.
Due to its proximity to mainland East Asia, Mojiko prospered as a center of international trade. Trading companies and major banks competed to establish branch offices there, creating the area’s distinctive streetscape.
After World War II, however, the center of trade shifted elsewhere, and the area entered a period of decline. Around the beginning of the Heisei era, local residents began promoting the preservation and active use of the district’s historical heritage, leading to the start of redevelopment.
In 1995 (Heisei 7), the district reopened as Mojiko Retro.
Today, Mojiko Retro is known not only for its historic architecture but also for local specialties such as Yaki Curry. In addition, the beauty of the sunsets over Mojiko and the night views of Kitakyushu City—including Mojiko Retro—which have been recognized as one of Japan’s New Three Great Night Views, have become increasingly well known. As a result, the area’s appeal as a tourist destination continues to grow.
