Asakusa Toyokan is a variety theater beloved as a “hub for comedy.”
Among the many renowned comedians who began their careers at its predecessor, the Asakusa France-za, are Beat Takeshi, Kinichi Hagimoto, Kiyoshi Atsumi, and Hachiro Higashi.
Today, the theater features many popular manzai duos and offers a rare opportunity to casually enjoy Japanese comedy while experiencing the history of Tokyo’s performing arts. Performances are held every day of the year, focusing on traditional yose entertainment other than rakugo, including manzai, comic storytelling, comedy skits, magic, paper cutting, acrobatics, impersonations, and ventriloquism.
The lineup ranges from up-and-coming performers to seasoned veterans, offering entertainment that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The theater is lively every day, and it is well worth stopping by during your visit to Asakusa.
