Hakodate Ropeway
Mount Hakodate, rising 334 meters above sea level, is located to the southwest of central Hakodate. Its silhouette resembles a reclining cow, which is why it is also known as Gagyūzan, or “Reclining Cow Mountain.” The Hakodate Ropeway connects the foot of the mountain to its summit.
The ropeway opened in 1958 (Showa 33). While the original gondolas accommodated 31 passengers, the current fifth-generation cabins can carry up to 125 people.
By day, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the harbor city. At night, the city lights shimmer like scattered jewels, creating a breathtaking scene that leaves a lasting impression.
Following the First Sino-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army developed plans to fortify Mount Hakodate as a key defensive position for Hakodate Bay. Construction of military facilities began in 1898, and the entire mountain was placed under strict military control.
As a result, public access was prohibited, and even photography, sketching, or speaking about the area was tightly restricted, enveloping the mountain in secrecy.
It was not until October 1946, after the end of World War II, that the area was finally opened to the public.
Because access had been restricted for such a long period, the mountain has preserved a rich natural environment. Today, it is home to approximately 600 species of plants and 150 species of wild birds, making it a valuable natural sanctuary.
