Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome
The highlight of Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome, which consists of three domes, is undoubtedly its collection of rare plants from tropical and subtropical regions. Plants endemic to the Ogasawara Islands—a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean located about 1,000 kilometers from Tokyo—are also a must-see.
The facility itself is relatively compact, and even including the 15-minute film shown in the video hall, a visit takes only about an hour. However, on weekends and holidays, one-hour guided tours led by volunteers are available, and videos are screened in the special exhibition room. Taking advantage of these programs will make your visit far more enjoyable than simply viewing the plants. Outside, there is also an herb garden and a water lily pond, both of which are well worth a visit.
Yumenoshima Park, where the greenhouse is located, was once a landfill site for waste from Tokyo. Landfill operations were carried out over a ten-year period from 1957 to 1967. Today, the area has been transformed into a beautiful park, with only the Shin-Koto Incineration Plant remaining on the eastern side. The waste heat generated by the plant is used to warm the greenhouses and provide heating and cooling for the building.
