Togo-Jinja is dedicated to Heihachiro Togo, a commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy who distinguished himself in the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. Admiral Togo is revered as the “God of Victory” primarily because of his leadership in the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War. Commanding the battleship Mikasa, he defeated the Russian Baltic Fleet, achieving one of the most decisive victories in the history of naval warfare and earning worldwide recognition.
The black, yellow, blue, and red flag seen throughout the shrine grounds is known as the “Z Flag.” During the Battle of Tsushima, it was hoisted aboard the Mikasa to inspire the crew. In honor of Heihachiro Togo, whose career was devoted to naval service, the shrine grounds also contain naval memorials, including the Monument to Naval Special-Year Volunteers and the Monument to Those Who Died in Submarine Service. There is also a lush garden, and the Togo Memorial Hall, located on the north side of the pond, serves as a wedding venue.
Today, the battleship Mikasa has been extensively restored and is open to the public in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, as World's Three Great Memorial Ship MIKASA.
