Sendai 3/11 Memorial Community Center
The Sendai 3/11 Memorial Community Center is a facility where visitors can learn about the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, it is not simply a place for one-way transmission of information.
Using March 11, 2011 as its point of departure, the center serves as a free, open space where people can reflect on the past, share memories and experiences of the disaster, and connect these reflections to the future.
The facility also functions as a gateway to the eastern coastal areas of Sendai, which suffered extensive tsunami damage. It is conveniently located for visiting nearby sites such as Mount Hiyoriyama, which was heavily eroded by the tsunami, and the Gamo Tidal Flat, an area gradually recovering as a habitat for diverse plant and bird life.
The building’s open and refined design, which received the Good Design Award in 2016, was overseen by the Field Design Center, Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, and realized through collaboration with local creators.
We invite you to spend time in this space—born from the resilience and aspirations of the people affected by the disaster—and to reflect once again on the events of that day.
