Sendai Astronomical Observatory
Since its opening in 1955, the Sendai Astronomical Observatory has been a beloved destination for the citizens of Sendai.
In the exhibition hall, visitors can explore the universe in an intuitive way through a large-scale model of the solar system and a variety of computer-generated displays.
The observatory also features a permanent exhibition of the “Sendai Domain Astronomical Instruments,” which were designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2012. These valuable instruments from the Edo period can be viewed up close.
The planetarium offers a wide range of programs, making it enjoyable for everyone—from families to couples.
In addition, the planetarium documentary Further Than the Stars, which portrays the connection between the night sky after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the people who lived through it, is screened on the first Saturday of every month at 7:40 p.m.
At the museum shop, original sweets inspired by the planets—such as cosmic-themed candy, marshmallows, and cookies—are especially popular as souvenirs.
Another highlight not to be missed is the “Hitomi Telescope,” which has an aperture of 1.3 meters. As one of the largest telescopes in Japan, it allows visitors to observe even faint stars that are invisible to the naked eye.
Public stargazing sessions are held every Saturday.
If weather conditions or humidity prevent observation, a special explanation of the Hitomi Telescope will be offered instead.
