The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, located near the Imperial Palace, was Japan’s first national art museum.
Its most distinctive feature is its collection of more than 14,000 works, one of the largest in Japan. It includes Important Cultural Properties by artists such as Yokoyama Taikan, Hishida Shunso, and Kishida Ryusei, as well as numerous masterpieces of Japanese art from the Meiji period to the present, alongside works from overseas. For each exhibition period, the “MOMAT Collection” presents around 200 carefully selected works from the museum’s holdings. It is the only exhibition in Japan where visitors can experience more than 100 years of Japanese art history in a single visit.
On every day the museum is open, guide staff lead the “MOMAT Collection Guide” program. Rather than simply listening to a one-way explanation, participants explore the artworks in greater depth through dialogue with the guides and with one another. The program is known for offering an experience that feels almost like unraveling the mysteries hidden within each work.
On the top floor, the fourth floor, there is also a rest area called “A Room With a View” Through its large windows, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the greenery of the Imperial Palace and the skyscrapers of Marunouchi.
The museum also holds several special exhibitions each year, introducing works of art from Japan and abroad based on a variety of themes.
