Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Opened in 1926, the final year of the Taisho era, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum was Japan’s first public art museum. Located in Ueno Park, it has long served as a center for artistic and cultural activities.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts approximately 260 exhibitions, including special exhibitions featuring masterpieces from Japan and around the world, a wide variety of museum-organized exhibitions, and open-call exhibitions presented by art associations. In addition, it offers a range of programs designed to encourage engagement with art, fulfilling its role as a “gateway to art.”
The museum also features two restaurants, a café, a museum shop, and other facilities. Admission to the building is free, allowing visitors to enjoy the restaurants and shops even without viewing an exhibition.
The building itself was designed by Kunio Maekawa, one of the leading figures of Japanese Modernist architecture. Architectural tours, held on the third Saturday of every odd-numbered month, are especially popular among visitors interested in architecture and design.
