Shuri Ryusen
Located just a five-minute walk from Shuri Castle, Shuri Ryusen is a traditional dyeing workshop where visitors can see, purchase, and experience Okinawan culture firsthand.
Here, you can observe the intricate craftsmanship of Okinawa’s traditional bingata and coral dyeing techniques up close.
Since ancient times, coral has been believed to bring happiness. In coral dyeing, fabric is placed over fossilized coral, and its natural patterns are transferred onto the cloth through a rubbing process.
Because each piece is dyed by hand, variations in color and pattern make every item truly one of a kind.
The shop offers a wide selection of casual clothing and yukata, as well as items suitable for special occasions such as weddings, births, housewarmings, and business openings. Gift sets combining multiple items are also especially popular.
A highlight is the coral dyeing workshop (reservation required), where you can create your own designs on T-shirts, tote bags, or furoshiki using fossilized coral.
Suitable for both children and adults, the workshop lasts approximately 50 minutes, and you can take your finished piece home the same day—making it a memorable and unique souvenir.
We highly recommend this hands-on experience, where you can create your own original work.
