Overlooking Mutsu Bay, Asamushi Aquarium is the northernmost aquarium on Honshu. It houses and exhibits a wide variety of aquatic life, including species native to Aomori and the surrounding region, as well as dolphins and penguins.
The aquarium’s arched tunnel tank, measuring 15 meters in length, 10 meters in width, and 3.5 meters in depth, was renovated in 2015 to recreate the underwater environment of Mutsu Bay, allowing visitors to observe its marine life up close.
Visitors are often amazed to see schools of fish such as horse mackerel, mackerel, and flounder—species more commonly associated with the dining table—swimming before their eyes, while larger fish such as rays glide past right in front of them.
The aquarium is also famous for its highly popular dolphin show. Held in a rare indoor venue, the performance is enhanced by beautifully scattered reflections of light, creating a unique atmosphere. It is also the only facility in Japan equipped with a curtain-opening system that heightens the dramatic impact of the show. Performances are held every day regardless of the weather, allowing visitors to enjoy the dolphins’ dynamic, music-accompanied jumps throughout the year.
Blessed with an abundance of seafood, Aomori has long maintained a close relationship with the sea. This aquarium offers visitors an opportunity to discover how local people have benefited from and lived alongside the rich bounty of the ocean.
