Toyosu Market opened in 2018, replacing Tsukiji Market, which had served as Tokyo’s central wholesale market since its opening in 1935. The market is 1.7 times larger than Tsukiji and is primarily divided into three sections: the Produce Building, the Seafood Wholesale Brokerage Building, and the Seafood Wholesale Building.
The Seafood Wholesale Building hosts auctions for products such as tuna, which attract many foreign visitors. Unlike Tsukiji, where visitors could observe the auctions at close range, Toyosu Market features a dedicated viewing deck. Along the visitor route on the second floor, displays explain the hand signals used by wholesale brokers during bidding.
Across from this building, the Seafood Wholesale Brokerage Building features a Viewing Gallery introducing seasonal seafood and recommended cooking methods throughout the year.
On the fourth floor, Uogashi Yokocho offers a wide variety of products, including market tools, tamagoyaki, processed foods, and prepared dishes, and is open to the general public.
In addition, the dining area is divided into three sections and includes a total of 38 restaurants. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of cuisine, including sushi, tempura, Japanese soba noodles, and coffee shops, preserving much of the culinary atmosphere once associated with Tsukiji.
Furthermore, the rooftop is a lawn-covered green space that offers panoramic views of ships at Harumi Pier and the surrounding skyline.
