Island Museum

Ikuchijima is known as an “Island Museum” as artworks of various sizes are installed throughout the island. True to its name, the entire island functions as a museum.
Seventeen sculptures by seventeen contemporary artists are placed along the island’s coastline, and all of them can be viewed free of charge.
While Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture is widely known for its art scene, Ikuchijima also has a strong artistic presence as the birthplace of the Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama.
It is said that each of the seventeen selected artists chose the location of their work themselves and created their pieces in response to the specific characteristics of each site.
