Innoshima Suigun Castle

Despite its name, Innoshima Suigun Castle is not an actual historical castle, but a rare castle-shaped museum.
Innoshima was once the stronghold of the Murakami Pirates, who have gained renewed attention in recent years through novels and other media. From the Nanboku-chō period through the Muromachi period, they dominated the waters of this region.
Although the word “pirates” often carries a negative image, the Murakami Pirates played an important role in protecting the safety of sailors by establishing maritime checkpoints in these fast-moving waters. They were also involved in the trade and distribution of high-quality ceramics from both Japan and overseas.
In addition, they possessed the cultural sophistication to enjoy tea ceremonies and renga poetry, while also maintaining the practical skills of fishermen who harvested fresh seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. Through these combined strengths, they prospered for several centuries.
At Innoshima Suigun Castle, visitors can explore exhibits introducing the Murakami Pirates and the unique history of the region.
