NPO Koubou Onomichi Hanpu

During the Edo period, Onomichi prospered as a port of call for Kitamae ships and became an important center for maritime transportation. As a result, the production of canvas, known in Japanese as “hanpu,” flourished in the region.
Over time, the fabric’s durability and breathability led to its use in tents, workwear, and other everyday items.
In recent years, the appeal of Onomichi Hanpu has been rediscovered, and it continues to be preserved as one of the city’s traditional industries while evolving into new products such as bags and household goods.
This workshop offers sturdy, vividly colored bags and accessories that are popular not only with local residents but also with tourists.
