Paper balloons are said to have been introduced to the villagers by Gennai Hiraga, an inventor who came to provide guidance for the Ani Mine in the Edo period. Paper balloons with wishes written on them, or with pictures of beautiful women or warriors painted on them, fluttering in the night sky is a magical sight.
