Inujima is a small island with a population of fewer than 50 people, located off the southeastern coast of Okayama Prefecture. Although there are several theories about the origin of its name, one legend says that the island came to be called “Inujima,” meaning “Dog Island,” because of a large rock on the island that resembles a crouching dog.
From the Nara period through the Warring States period, Inujima was known as one of the leading pirate strongholds in the Seto Inland Sea. By the Edo period, however, the island prospered through the quarrying of a type of granite known as “Inujima Mikage.”
It is said that the island’s original landscape was dramatically altered as a result of this quarrying activity.
During the Meiji era, Inujima entered a new phase of industrial development with the growth of the copper smelting industry. However, this industry also eventually declined.
In 2008, Benesse Corporation launched the “Inujima Art Project,” through which the former Inujima Smelter was transformed into an art museum.
In addition, the “House Project,” which makes use of vacant houses in the village affected by depopulation, was established. Through these efforts, Inujima has begun a new chapter as an island of contemporary art.
