Kibitsujinja Shrine is renowned for its beautiful seasonal scenery, from plum and peony blossoms in spring to hydrangeas in early summer and golden ginkgo leaves in autumn. Although there are various theories regarding its origins, the shrine is believed to date back to the ancient Kibi Province.
Particularly noteworthy is the shrine’s main hall. Rebuilt in the early Muromachi period, it features a distinctive architectural style with two gabled roofs joined side by side beneath a single large hip-and-gable roof.
Comparable in scale to the main halls of Izumo Taisha and Yasaka Shrine, the structure also reflects strong influences from Buddhist architecture. Together with the worship hall connected to its front, it has been designated a National Treasure of Japan.
Another highlight is the long corridor extending south from the main hall. Gracefully following the natural slope of the land in a straight line, it is admired for its refined and elegant design.
The shrine enshrines Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto, a deity said to have ruled this region in ancient times. According to legend, Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto defeated a demon known as Ura, a story believed to have later inspired the Japanese folktale “Momotaro.”
For this reason, it is said that the head of the demon slain by Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto is buried beneath the Okamaden Hall located on the western side of the shrine. Even today, the traditional “Narukama Shinji” ritual is performed there, using the sound of a boiling cauldron to divine good or bad fortune.
In addition, the “Yaoki-iwa” (Arrow-Placing Rock), enshrined on the northern side of the grounds, is also connected to the demon-slaying legend. During the New Year period, the “Yadate no Shinji” ritual is held there to ward off evil spirits.
