Okayama Korakuen Garden is a feudal lord’s garden dating from the Edo period, renowned for its beautifully designed landscapes that showcase the changing seasons.
One of the garden’s distinctive features is that it was significantly modified by successive lords of the domain. Ikeda Tsunamasa, the second lord of the Bizen-Okayama Domain, sought to create a place of tranquility within the garden and designed it so that visitors could enjoy views from the many pavilions built throughout the grounds. He was also fond of rural landscapes, and as a result, the garden once contained numerous rice paddies and cultivated fields.
Tsunamasa’s son, Tsugumasa, later built a small hill known as Yuishin-zan in the center of the garden and arranged waterways and ponds around its base, creating a more three-dimensional landscape.
In 1771, however, the domain encountered financial difficulties. To reduce maintenance costs, many of the cultivated fields were replaced with lawns, which required less upkeep. While these expansive lawns are now regarded as one of Korakuen’s defining characteristics, the square rice paddies known as Seiden still remain as reminders of the garden’s former rural scenery.
Although the garden retains much of its Edo-period appearance today, many of its buildings were destroyed in air raids during World War II. The restoration of all structures within the garden was not completed until 1967.
There are records showing that wild red-crowned cranes once visited the garden. Today, red-crowned cranes are carefully raised and maintained here by dedicated caretakers.
