Achi Shrine
Achi Shrine is dedicated to the Three Goddesses of Munakata, revered as guardian deities of the sea.
The shrine’s origins date back to 1594 (Bunroku 3), when the former Myoken Shrine—once enshrined at a nearby temple—was relocated to its present site. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1869 (Meiji 2), it was renamed Achi Shrine, under which it continues to be known today.
The main hall, where the deities are enshrined, features a rare cypress-bark roof, an architectural style that has become increasingly uncommon even within the prefecture. It is designated as a Cultural Property of Kurashiki City. In March 2024, the roof was rethatched with cypress bark for the first time in approximately 30 years, and as of 2026, the shrine stands in renewed beauty within its tranquil grounds.
As the guardian shrine of Kurashiki’s city center—including the Bikan Historical Quarter—Achi Shrine has long watched over the city’s development. Within the grounds, you will find a variety of smaller shrines and sacred sites. Be sure to visit the Ema Hall, which offers a panoramic view over the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, as well as the rabbit sculpture located just beneath the Zuishin Gate.
On the north side of the main hall grows the Achi Wisteria, designated a Natural Monument of Okayama Prefecture. This exceptional plant is an Akebono Wisteria variety and is considered the oldest and largest of its kind in Japan. The best viewing season is from mid to late April. Amulets containing its seeds are believed to bring blessings for good health and harmonious relationships in marriage.
