Kurashiki Mingeikan (Kurashiki Museum of Folkcraft)
A collection of practical items born from everyday life
Discover tips for a “beautiful life”
The Kurashiki Mingeikan opened in 1948 in a former rice storehouse dating back to the late Edo period. As the first facility in Japan to repurpose a traditional storehouse in this way, it became a catalyst for preserving Kurashiki’s historic townscape.
The word mingei is a coined term meaning “folk crafts.” During the Taisho era, as Westernization advanced and mass production became widespread, a movement emerged that valued the “healthy beauty” found in everyday objects handcrafted by anonymous artisans—beauty considered equal to that of fine art. The term mingei was born from this philosophy.
The museum exhibits around 600 items, including ceramics, woodwork, and dyed textiles—practical objects deeply connected to everyday life. It also houses a collection of paintings known as Korean folk paintings, which were originally created for practical purposes such as education and protection against misfortune.
In addition, the museum regularly hosts special exhibitions based on a variety of themes. Free from excessive ornamentation and designed with practicality in mind, these everyday objects often feel more approachable than expensive works of fine art. As you quietly take in the exhibits within this calm and tranquil space, you may discover ideas and inspiration that can enrich your own daily life.
