Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
A townscape preserved from the Tenryo era
Explore traditional Japanese-style cafes and gift shops
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a preserved historic quarter located about a 15-minute walk south of Kurashiki Station.
The area’s timeless charm comes from its picturesque streetscape, where traditional storehouses with distinctive namako walls stand alongside traditional townhouses.
Among the many historic buildings open to the public, the Ohara Residence, Shinkei-en Garden, and the Ohashi House are especially valuable sites where visitors can step inside and experience traditional Japanese architecture firsthand.
These historic structures blend harmoniously with Western-style buildings from the Taisho and early Showa periods, while the changing scenery of the seasons and weather adds even more beauty to the quarter.
Thanks to its atmospheric townscape, the area has frequently been used as a filming location for NHK television dramas and movies, attracting many visitors eager to see the real-life settings.
The quarter is also home to outstanding cultural facilities, including the Ohara Museum of Art—renowned for one of Japan’s finest collections of Western art—as well as Kurashiki Ivy Square and the Kurashiki Folk Craft Museum.
Most of the main attractions are located within walking distance of one another. With numerous cafés and souvenir shops housed in renovated traditional buildings, along with workshops where visitors can experience crafts unique to Kurashiki, it is easy to spend an entire day leisurely strolling through the town.
