Roadside Station Shodoshima Olive Park

Located on a hillside overlooking the sea, Roadside Station Shodoshima Olive Park is home to 2,000 olive trees and more than 130 varieties of herbs, offering scenery reminiscent of the Mediterranean coast.
Olives were first introduced to Japan in the late Edo period, when they were used for medicinal purposes.
Later, as olive oil became necessary for preserving canned fish such as tuna and sardines, full-scale olive cultivation began on Shodoshima in 1908 (Meiji 41) and was a great success.
Although olive oil production on Shodoshima later faced competition from inexpensive imported products following postwar trade liberalization, the growing health-conscious movement renewed interest in domestically produced olive oil, bringing Shodoshima’s olives back into the spotlight.
The white Greek Windmill, the symbol of Olive Park, creates the atmosphere of Southern Europe, with the Seto Inland Sea evoking the Aegean Sea.
