The Fukugi Tree Avenue in Bise
A green tunnel where sunlight filters through the leaves
A tree that brings “good fortune,” with leaves that stay green all year round
In the village of Bise, surrounded on three sides by the sea, rows of Fukugi trees line both sides of the streets, forming natural windbreaks that protect homes from the sea breeze of the East China Sea and the strong northerly winds of winter. This narrow gravel path, gently lit by dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves, captures the timeless charm of traditional Okinawan scenery.
In recent years, however, stylish cafés have begun to appear among the old houses, and the area is gradually gaining popularity as a tourist destination.
The Fukugi tree, originally introduced from Southeast Asia, is written in kanji as “福” (fuku, meaning “good fortune”) and “木” (ki, meaning “tree”), and has long been cherished as a symbol of happiness. While it is a familiar presence throughout Okinawa, nowhere else can you see such an extensive concentration of these trees.
With its rich green foliage throughout the year, the Fukugi tree has also been valued for practical uses: its bark and leaves have traditionally been used as a natural dye, producing a bright yellow hue.
If you follow the tree-lined path northward, you will arrive at Bisezaki, where a beautiful expanse of ocean unfolds before you. To the south lies Emerald Beach. Renting a bicycle is a wonderful way to explore this tranquil area at your own pace.
