Asumui Hikes (formerly known as Daisekirinzan) is a nature trail facility located in Kunigami Village at the northern tip of Okinawa Island. As visitors walk through the forests spreading across the middle slopes of the rocky mountain known as “Asumui,” they can experience both the natural beauty and the mythical atmosphere of Yanbaru.
Along the trails, visitors can enjoy a variety of scenic highlights, including the distinctive rock formations and massive boulders characteristic of karst terrain. These landscapes were formed from limestone that rose from the seabed some 250 million years ago and was gradually shaped over immense spans of time through erosion and dissolution. The site is also home to one of Japan’s largest banyan trees, as well as observation decks offering sweeping panoramic views.
In addition, Asumui is recorded in the Chūzan Seikan, Okinawa’s oldest historical chronicle, as the place first created by Amamiku, the deity of Ryukyuan creation mythology. During the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it was revered as a sacred place where prayers were offered for the prosperity of the royal family, abundant harvests, and safe voyages.
To help visitors gain a deeper understanding of this special site, audio guide commentary is available at 26 points along the walking courses. There is also a barrier-free route designed so that elderly visitors and wheelchair users can explore the area safely and comfortably.
The Stone Museum, themed around “The Stones of Okinawa,” displays rock specimens collected from across the prefecture, along with a large collection of traditional stone tools once used in everyday life.
