“Murasakimura: The Kingdom of Experiences” is a theme park where visitors can enjoy 101 different hands-on experiences related to Okinawan culture through 32 types of workshops.
The facility was originally constructed as an open studio for the 1993 NHK historical drama series The Wind of Ryukyu and was later transformed into a tourist attraction as part of a regional revitalization project.
Although it began as a film set, the vividly colored townscape recreates the atmosphere of the Ryukyu Kingdom during the 14th and 15th centuries with remarkable authenticity.
From the “Tenshi-kan,” modeled after the lodgings used by envoys from China, to the “Jana-tei” dining hall inspired by a Ryukyuan samurai residence, and the “Kume Experience Hall,” which recreates the homes of immigrants from China’s Fujian Province, the entire site offers a fascinating glimpse into Ryukyuan culture and history.
The hands-on programs available throughout these buildings range from traditional crafts such as Yachimun pottery and Bingata dyeing to performing arts such as kankara sanshin and Ryukyu dance, as well as activities like karate and horseback riding.
Many programs can be joined without advance reservations, and at the visitor center, guests can browse examples of finished works before choosing an activity to try on the spot.
