Southeast Botanical Gardens originally opened as a farm in 1968 (Showa 43). After periods of closure and subsequent renovations, it has grown into a botanical garden with a history spanning more than 50 years.
The garden is divided into two areas: the Water Garden and the Botanical Garden. The Water Garden is known for its lotus flowers, baobab trees, and dragon trees.
In particular, its lotus pond is one of the largest in Okinawa Prefecture. Because the lotus flowers bloom at sunrise and close by midday, the garden hosts early-morning events during the summer so that visitors can enjoy them at their best.
The garden is also popular for offering close encounters with animals such as capybaras and miniature goats.
Meanwhile, the Botanical Garden provides a relaxing environment surrounded by rare tropical plants, including the towering King Palms. One of Okinawa’s unique attractions is the ability to grow and display tropical plants outdoors throughout the year rather than in greenhouses.
While the audio-guided shuttle bus is a convenient way to explore the expansive grounds, the guided tour is especially recommended.
As of 2026, guided tours include unique botanical-garden experiences such as making “elephant trunk cups” from lotus leaves and enjoying a refreshing leaf shower.
