Mt. Esan rises dramatically at the eastern tip of the Oshima Peninsula, as if jutting out into the Tsugaru Strait. It was formed by volcanic activity that began approximately 50,000 years ago.
Its name comes from the Ainu language and means “a mountain where lava erupts.” Although volcanic activity has been relatively calm since a minor eruption in 1874, Mt. Esan remains an active volcano, with smoke still rising from eight craters.
Despite its modest elevation of 618 meters, the mountain’s coastal location makes it prone to fog caused by ocean currents. Limited sunlight and harsh conditions create a vegetation environment comparable to that of mountains over 2,000 meters high on Honshu.
As a result, there is a striking contrast between the lush plant life at the foothills—such as blooming Ezo azaleas—and the barren landscape near the summit, where reddish-brown rocks and soil dominate.
On clear days, however, visitors are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views: Mount Yōtei, one of Hokkaido’s most famous peaks, lies to the north; the Hidaka Mountains stretch to the east; and to the south, the view extends across the Tsugaru Strait to the Shimokita Peninsula, offering a sweeping perspective of Hokkaido’s grand natural scenery.
The hike to the summit takes about two and a half hours from the main trailhead. Alternatively, if you drive to the Kakōgen (Crater Plain) Parking Lot and begin your walk there, the elevation gain is approximately 310 meters, and the summit can be reached in about one hour and ten minutes.
As volcanic gases are present, with occasional smoke and a noticeable sulfur smell, please take care and remain mindful of safety during your hike.
