Kurama Onsen (hot spring)
After you’ve walked around Mount Kurama and visited temples and shrines, you should feel spiritually recharged. Now, how about healing your physical body? Tucked away in the mountains of Kurama, also known as the parlor of Kyoto, is Kurama Onsen, a quiet hot springs resort.
There is a public bathhouse and an outdoor hot springs, and you’re welcome to use both, even if you’re just here for the day. You can rent a drying towel, a bath towel and a yukata robe as a set and there is even a restroom you can use at no extra charge. You can opt to use only the outdoor bath.
The simple hydrogen sulfide water from these springs is said to help treat neuralgia, rheumatism, lower back pain and other skin conditions.
The outdoor bath, which is a little further from the public bath, is a great place where you can enjoy a view of Mount Kurama in the distance, the changing of the leaves in the fall and the Yuki-mi onsen in the winter. Because it also has a small indoor bath, you can warm up again after soaking in the Yuki-mi spring. The old townscape off Kurama road on the way to the resort is also picturesque. Let's take a walk up to the hot springs and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
